On the lower Mississippi, your family can visit St. Joseph Plantation and discover what life was like in the 1800s. You’ll do some chores, play some old-fashioned games, and imagine what it must have been like to live and grow up there in the days before the Civil War.

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, you can tour the restored USS Kidd and learn what it was like to serve a tour of duty on a World War II destroyer. If you’re a veteran, here’s a great way to share memories of your wartime experiences with your family. Further upriver, you can call on Mark Twain’s hometown of Hannibal, Missouri, where you can board a tram with Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher, pan for gems and “whitewash the fence” just like Tom had to do years ago.
